Een wereld vol verandering

De muziekwereld kan gezien worden als een levend organisme: net zoals in de fysieke wereld, worden er nieuwe trends geboren die groeien en groeien totdat ze uiteindelijk afsterven. Per genre of trend kan dit verschillend zijn: soms blijven genres – of artiesten – voor een lange tijd populair, terwijl trends net zo goed per dag verschillend kunnen zijn. Toch zijn er bepaalde rode draden te vinden in dit spinnenweb van constante verandering en een overvloed aan productie.

Zo zijn veel artiesten tegenwoordig bestempeld met het label indie, wat simpelweg inhoudt dat ze zelf hun muziek produceren en geen – of een zeer kleine – platenlabel hebben. Hoewel deze betekenis verder niet de muziek zelf definieert, worden de sub-genres zoals indie-rock en indie-pop vaak gekoppeld aan (de beginselen van) bands als Arctic Monkeys, Imagine Dragons en OneRepublic (Wikipedia, 2023). De indie genre wordt tegenwoordig vaak geassocieerd met radio-vriendelijke nummers, die prettig zijn om af te spelen in de winkels door de vaak milde maar melodieuze (gitaar)deuntjes. Zo wordt de wereldhit As It Was van Harry Styles (2022) gezien als een nummer met indie sound (Garibay, 2022).

Een andere trend, die ook te maken heeft met de indie genre, is de toenemende hoeveelheid bands en artiesten die geen label hebben of zelf hun eigen muzieklabel oprichten. Dit gebeurt onder andere door veelvragende contracten met deze labels, waardoor de artiest geen eigendomsrecht heeft over de zelfgeschreven nummers, zoals het geval was bij Taylor Swift, en ook een groot percentage van de winst moet afstaan (Moser, 2023). Ook maakt de digitalisering het makkelijker voor artiesten om hun eigen muziek te promoten en uit te brengen met behulp van bedrijven zoals TikTok, YouTube en Bandcamp. Het internet is ook een goede bron van kennis om autonoom te worden op dit gebied, dus de financiële kennis die labels hebben, is tegenwoordig minder noodzakelijk om te overleven in de muziekindustrie (Anderson, 2014).

Wat betreft het gebruik van sociale media, is de rol van artiesten en bands tegenwoordig ook veranderd; veel jonge artiesten krijgen tegenwoordig hun doorbraak door grappige video’s, zoals TikTokker Casey Lowry, die inmiddels al meerdere keren in de Melkweg heeft gespeeld (Melkweg, z.d.). Hierdoor is de rol van een artiest niet alleen maar het zijn van een musicus, maar ook een entertainer. Dit is een grote verandering voor zowel de verwachting van artiesten als de ervaring van de live shows; in plaats van redelijk introverte, stille musici die beroemd zijn geworden door hun unieke muziek, komt het nu vaker voor dat de artiesten bekend zijn geworden door sociale media en hun rol daarin, wat een bepaalde verwachting schept voor hun verdere gedrag en de live shows.

Al met al is door de komst en de groei van de digitalisering behoorlijk veel veranderd in de muziekwereld. Inmiddels is het een samensmelting van verschillende werelden, waarbij indie muziek een hele andere betekenis heeft gekregen, waarbij artiesten steeds meer autonoom worden maar ook steeds meer autonoom moeten worden, waarbij een artiest ook een boekhouder, een tourmanager en een comedian is. Een wereld waar overduidelijk nog veel ruimte is voor een betere behandeling van diens sterren.

Developer OVERDRIVE has launched a Campfire campaign to crowdfund PlayStation 4 and Switch versions of rock-and-roll visual novel MUSICUS! The studio is seeking 39,696,960 yen in funding.

MUSICUS! first launched for PC in December 2019 in Japan, followed by a western release via Steam in April 2021 in Japan.

The console versions will be published by Entergram and feature a renovated user interface, script revisions by original writer Renya Setoguchi to deeper depict characters and their mentality, additional CG cuts by Kohaku Sumeragi, six new songs, a renewed ending video for every route (handled by gram6design), and higher production concert scenes.

Story

Kei Tsushima, a student on the fast track to university, dropped out under sudden circumstances. While not as smooth as originally planned, he is now at part-time night school to continue his efforts to become a doctor like his father and fulfill his family’s expectations.

But recently he is less trusting of his mandated course: “Is this what’s best for me?”

The various people he meets from all walks of life in his new class environment help broaden his perspective and give him a glimpse of the things he is still unaware of in this world.

“…Can I really go back after this?”

“Do I actually want to be a doctor?”

“Was that the purpose for me, Kei Tsushima, being brought into this life?”

After submitting a short story to a city writing contest on a whim, he soon received a request from the head of a music production company, Yagihara, to write about a certain band on the company’s label, under the condition that he travel with them to one of their live performances.

The band in question was Kacho-Fugetsu, who were formerly signed to a major commercial label. Korekiyo Hanai, the leader of the band, is a peculiar man, who for some reason professes the meaninglessness of music to Kei on the way to the show. While at a loss for how to interpret that, Kei sees his first live rock show with Kacho-Fugetsu, and he is instantaneously swept up in the music.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685- 1750) Sonata nach Reincken “Hortus Musicus” BWV 965. 

The theme from this work comes from Jan Adam Reincken’s Hortus Musicus series, a marvellous work featuring many innovative melodic and harmonic techniques. 

Like many other composers, Bach would transcribe the works of existing composers and use them as a template of study in counterpoint, fugue, harmony, etc. Fortunately, scholars have been able to identify the original composer, as there were no copyright laws at the time. Telemann was one of the few composers able to maintain intellectual control over his work. 

One of the most appealing parts of Bach’s complex character was his generosity and homage to his predecessors. Jan Adam Reincken was a friend of another great composer Bach admired, Dieterich Buxtehude, whom he visited in Lübeck. Apparently, Bach improvised a fantasia on the chorale An Wasserflüssen Babylon before Reincken, who reportedly said, "I thought that this art was dead, but I see that it lives in you." 

Whatever the case, we know Bach met Reincken in Hamburg, and his masterful adaptation of Hortus Musicus weaves in the original themes with daring new counterpoint and harmony. It culminates in a marvellous Gigue which summarises all the musical ideas thus far acquired, and includes energetic left hand parts. This once again showcases Bach’s requirement for both hands to play equal parts in music, leading the Baroque away from sedate accompaniment. 

As proof of the great North German organ tradition, it is worth nothing that Reincken was not only a friend of Buxtehude, but a pupil of Heinrich Scheidemann (1595- 1663), whose own organ works include dissonant harmonies that predate Bach. Scheidemann himself was a pupil of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562- 1621). 

These are the fathers of German organ tradition (though some were from The Netherlands and further afield) and Bach would have studied their work intensively throughout his life. No doubt he played and improvised upon them, too. If you want to succeed at anything, learn from the best. Strange as it may seem to us, when it came to organ music in Bach’s day, nobody was better than Buxtehude, Reincken, etc.

A reworked kobold race (5e)

I never liked the official take on player kobolds in this edition - I mean really, who the heck decided that stat penalties needed to make a comeback? And race features that severely limit the range of character personalities are just bad features. So here's my take on a new stat block, using the "Detect Greater Balance" calculations as they're more detailed than the original Musicus scale (tumblr likes to hide posts with links, but Google has it). It rates a 25 where the average for player races is 27. Ability Scores: Dex +2, Int +1 Size: Small Languages: Common plus one other. Speed: 30 Senses: You have darkvision 60. You have disadvantage on Investigation and Perception checks in direct sunlight. Trickster's Spirit: Gain proficiency in one of Athletics, Stealth, Investigation, Animal Handling, or Deception. Clever Worker: Choose one artisan tool, navigator's tools, or thieves' tools. You are proficient with it, and use double your bonus as if you had expertise. Kobold Magic: Intelligence is your casting stat. -At level one you know one cantrip out of Dancing Lights, Minor Illusion, or Prestidigitation. -At level 3 you may also learn either Disguise Self or Unseen Servant and cast it once per day. -At level 5 you may also cast Invisibility once per day. This makes for a more folklore-flavored kobold, equally suitable for making a nighttime house/shop helper, a miner kobold, or a seafaring klabautermann. You can flavor appearance as fits your setting, whether you want little dragon people or little dog people or little goblin lookin' guys. (Personally, I think my setting will end up with all three via regional differences.)
